Services
APL Communications Ltd supply and install the following services:
Cat 5e
Category –5e structured cabling: It may not be as new to industry as it was ten years ago, but it is still able to provide the majority of business with all the necessary speed, security and reliability they require.
Cat 5e cabling consists of four twisted pairs of copper wire terminated by RJ45 connectors. Category 5e cable supports frequencies up to 100 MHz and speeds up to 1000 Mbps and can be used for ATM, token ring, 1000Base-T, 100Base-T, and 10Base-T networking so you can see it is very flexible.
Cat-5e is based on the EIA/TIA 568 Commercial Building Telecommunications Wiring Standard developed by the Electronics Industries Association as requested by the Computer Communications Industry Association in 1985.
Category 6
Although category 6 is where industry is moving, and it is certainly true that the capability of category 6, in terms of the amount of data which can be transferred, is higher than Category 5e, current hardware is unable to transfer the data at that speed. So, until technology catches up, applying the term future proof doesn’t necessarily apply.
However, when making the investment decision to install Category 6, it should be considered that technology is expected to exceed current speeds, accommodated by Category 5 and 5e, within five years. Therefore, if your investment is expected to last for at least a decade, Category 6, which is now ratified, is exactly the investment your company should be making.
Wireless
The term wireless has become a by word in IT and works extremely well in many areas of education and retail. Business has also found it to be a useful tool in this age of light notebooks and laptops that can be easily carried from one office to another, board rooms or meeting rooms without the necessity of having to take wires and ensuring that sockets are available.
Installing access ports in critical locations can enable your workforce to be completely mobile within your building and speed up the transfer of information or the necessity for people to remember after meetings that they must perform certain tasks as often these tasks can be carried out during the meeting saving time and resource.
However, it must be noted that it isn’t as fast as a hard-wired solution and depending on the grade of the equipment running it, and environmental issues, difficulties can arise in maintaining the signal.
Fibre
Fibres major use in the UK is where a distance is further than 90 metres within a building or if external cabling is required. You can purchase external category 5e cable for distances shorter than 90m for instance to run outside of a building and this may be all that’s required. If the distance is longer, between buildings or multi storey buildings the fibre is definitely recommended as an alternative.
All of our main installers are City and Guild Fibre installation qualified. We have installed fibre within buildings and between buildings and blown fibre which can give the customer greater flexibility in future proofing their investment is becoming more and more popular over the greater distances.
Additional Services
We also provide our customers with the following services:
Epos
Electronic point of sale at one time was slow and unreliable, not just due to the software used but also the cabling used. The wrong specification can cause unreliability especially in a fast moving environment.
These days, whether using Cat5e or 8 core and 2 pair reliability on the cabling side has improved considerably. A number of our customers use both systems and along with our 20 year warranty on all our cabling installations we believe in the systems we install.
Voice
The installations we carry out for our customers can be either structured or unstructured depending on their preference and sometimes a combination of both, structured within the building from the server room and unstructured from the server room to the BT DP using the relevant pair cable to allow them full useage of any and all lines they have delivered by BT.
Electrical
(We have working relationships with several reputable electrical companies where we work together and the customer deals only with one point of contact.)
All installations are certified according to NICEIC & ECA regulations. Our electrical engineers are trained to the relevant & required JIB accreditation 16th edition, accredited with Health & Safety, First Aid & CSCS training.
If you would like to discuss any of these services further, please contact the APL Communications team who will be only too pleased to help.

Recent projects
Mecca Bingo
APL Communications have just completed the re-cabling of the Mecca Bingo Clubs EPOS system in line with their purchase of MCR's web enabled symphony reporting system allowing Mecca to monitor and controll their entire EPOS system in real time.
The works were carried out in two phases ensuring the balance between the MCR requirements and the Mecca infrastructure. With only a short working window the organisation of the installations was logistically a challange but nothing that we haven't dealt with before but we were pleased to have the opportunity to show off the skills of our Project Managers and Installers.
