Mecca Bingo EPOS cabling
APL Communications have just completed the re-cabling of the Mecca Bingo Clubs EPOS system in line with their purchase of MCR's web enabled symphony reporting system allowing Mecca to monitor and controll their entire EPOS system in real time.
The works were carried out in two phases ensuring the balance between the MCR requirements and the Mecca infrastructure. With only a short working window the organisation of the installations was logistically a challange but nothing that we haven't dealt with before but we were pleased to have the opportunity to show off the skills of our Project Managers and Installers.

Sainsbury's CCTV cabling
APL carried out the cabling for the entire distribution centre's CCTV operation recently installed at Sainsbury's Haydock on behalf of the ID Technology Group. The building which runs a 24 hour operation required working at height as well as health & safety coverage on an hour to hour basis.
As one of the largest distribution centres work couldn’t stop in an area just because we needed to be in it too, therefore within each section a health & safety officer was allocated to a team to ensure that whether working at height or not, both Sainsbury's and APL could continue to work safely.
The downside of this was that when the H&S officer went on a break, our installers had to break too. Taking regular breaks wasn’t a problem but the timing of these breaks could be crucial and possibly lose the team a considerable amount of time. Therefore the lead installer had to plan his works properly, always considering at what stage the team were likely to be at the time the H&S Officer was going to breaking.
After the first week the team had this down pat, then of course the shift change meant they had to start over again with a new H&S Officer. Undaunted the teams plowed on and were able to complete the works a week ahead of schedule.
Elder Gate Cat5e points installation
A recent project undertaken by APL was the Krone installation of 2000 cat5e points in a structured system at Elder gate in the station complex of Milton Keynes.
The client is a global market leader in telecommunications with whom we have a privacy agreement so are unable to name directly.
The contract also entailed provisions for 48 cat6 lines and 6 100pair CW1308 cables to link between the two comms rooms for data and voice backbones.
Each desk had a double cat5e outlet along with twin power sockets presented on a desk top pod making it quick and easy for moves and changes, which happen often in this organisation.
All the patching was also undertaken by apl with a patching schedule and marked plans provided to the customer for ease of handover to their IT department. As well as the hard copies presented within the cabinets, we provided softcopy’s of the schedule so any changes to the patching within the secure cooms rooms could be updated regularly enabling IT to manage the patching effectively which is essential in large modern installs.
Our client was extremely happy with APL and we are continuing to aid with the development and growth of their IT infrastructure in the UK and Eire.

Electronic point of sale at one time was slow and unreliable, not just due to the software used but also the cabling used. The wrong specification can cause unreliability especially in a fast moving environment.
These days, whether using Cat5e or 8 core and 2 pair reliability on the cabling side has improved considerably. A number of our customers use both systems and along with our 20 year warranty on all our cabling installations we believe in the systems we install.
